For many centuries, Catholic cathedrals were home to a schola cantorum. Translated literally, this simply means school of singing; however, a cathedral's schola was about more than singing. Growing out of the deep roots of monastic tradition, a schola at its finest combines the monks' sense of brotherhood with a goal of self-improvement, both musically and spiritually. It accomplishes this through entering more deeply into music, liturgy, Sacred Scripture and scriptural writing. Previous singing experience is welcome but not required. What is required is weekly participation. This commitment is vital, not just to the development of schola but to the life of the Church: Catholic men, growing in faith, brotherhood and unity is a powerful antidote to the forces of evil at work in the world against faith, family and God.
The group will meet Saturday afternoons from 4:00-6:30 p.m. From 4:00 - 5:15 p.m., they will gather in the Victory Annex for rehearsal and discussion of the week's readings. Then the group will move to the Cathedral's choir loft to sing for the 5:30 p.m. Mass. Please prayerfully consider joining - this is a different kind of men's group. There will be a schola cantorum "Open House" on Saturday, April 5, at 4:00 p.m. in the Victory Annex. All are welcome to attend without obligation to join - come, ask questions and see if you think you'd be a good fit. For more information, visit olvcathedral.org/schola.
